August 13 Break out the bonfires! It's 'Nazi Germany' all over again...... For almost 25 years, we've been bombarded with rap music, movies, and an assortrment of other mediums which drop the "N" word, like Perez Hilton drops names at a party. Kids use it playgounds, some schools use it when teaching ebonics, and it's been used on numerous occasions in the media.
So apparently, because one, solitary Brampton parent with the I.Q. God gave DIRT complained, we're resorting to book-banning. And not just any book, people. We're banning "To Kill A Mockingbird", as required school reading. Ironically enough, a book that best demonstrates the ongoing struggles of racial and social injustice.
Wow.
Congradulations to this parent, for sending us back seventy years to "Nazi Germany".
Are you a neophyte? Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. You're probably the same Grade-A simpleton, that permits their child access to music which drops the very same word, every three lines. Or attempts to re-write history, in addition to infringing on other's rights, by banning the Confederate Flag. Hypocritical, don't you think?
Here's some facts you didn't take into acount, before you went runing to the Board of Education.
This novel was written in 1960 by a white woman named Harper Lee, who lived in Alabama. "Why is this important?". you ask? For severals reasons, actually. It's important you know, one of the greatest and most influentuial tools every used by the educational system to denounce racism and class bias, WAS NOT written by an African-American. It was written by someone who didn't even suffer such hardships. Yet was SO disturbed by what she saw around her, she felt compelled to do something about it. And did so. Not in the politically correct, diverse "melting pot" of 2009 Canada. But in 1960's, southern United States. In which African American sympathizers has their lives threatened on a daily basis. Right alongside black Americans. Not exactly a kosher time, in American race-relations.
Did Lee need to take such risks? No. But she did. And certainly not for her own benefit. So CONGRADULATIONS! Your ban has essentially pissed away all the good her book has done, over the almost 50-plus years it has been circulating in schools throught the world.
Interesting side note: In 2007, George Bush Jr., the alleged "racist" former President of The United States of America, issued Lee the "Presidential Medal of Freedom". An award bestowed to individuals who "recognizes individuals who have made an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors". He thought THAT much of her novel, and the subsequent good works it provided us with.
But what the hell do we know?
So thanks for setting us straight.
