July 11 The Chris Benoit story.... This place looks dusty inside. I haven't been here, in God knows how long. But at least I now know, I still have the key to it. And possession is nine-tenths of the law. And although I'm currently sick as a dog at the moment, I'm going to take the time out to say this.....
I've been following the Chris Benoit story, since it came over the televison. I've observed and read, alot of unsubstantiated bullshit regarding the matter. Coming from both the general public, and people in his piticular industry. I even took one of our local papers columnists to task on some of the dribble he wrote, and have yet to hear back from the man. Possibly because he knows he's in the wrong, and is too embarasssed to say anything else regarding the matter. And although I'm in no way condoning what he did, I will say this.
Before anyone makes any kind of judgement on the man, or what transpired that fateful weekend, be sure to check your facts before drawing any conclusions. Because apparently, nobody in the media is bothering to.
Chris Benoit has been accused of being a raging steroid addict. This despite the fact, he passed a test conducted for steroid abuse with flying colours, as late as April of this year for his employer. He had absolutely no criminal history of physical violence, and had legal perscriptions for any medications (including perscribed steroids) found in his home. Not to mention, we've yet to hear the results of a toxicology screen performed upon his death.
Benoit was also accused of being an unstable psychopath. Both in and out of the ring. But try finding ONE honest individual (And I must add the word "honest", because I know of at least two "attention whores" in his profession, who've already commented publically on the incident. Neither of which, have had a good thing to say about anyone BUT themselves, in their 30-plus years in the buisness.) who worked, travelled, trained, and spent time with him during his entire career, who will back that arguement. If anything, his co-workers have said the opposite. Chris Jerico, on "Larry King Live", even went so far as to say he would not have given it a second thought, to have left his own children in the care of Chris Benoit. That should speak volumes on its own, about his character, and psychological condition.
While it's becoming more apparent what transpired that fateful weekend, I think the notion of steroids coming into play will play less and less a part. More evidence points to the fact, that Chris probably suffered one, giant psychological meltdown, and did what he did. True "psychopaths" don't feel remorse. They don't commit suicide after their deeds, or lay Bibles down next to their loved ones as an act of contrition like Chris did. As much as the label may make us feel better, it just doesnt' fit the profile of a psychpath or sociopath.
We may never know for certain what occured. But let's not muddle the waters any worse than they already are, but confusing fiction as fact. The media have done a bad enough job as it is.
R.I.P. Chris
